I love the decorative look of a ceiling fan as much as the next person, but there are things to consider when you put one in your house; especially the bedroom. Ceiling fans make wonderful decorating and utilitarian statements in a room. You can look at the fan and see how beautiful it matches the décor of the room, and then turn it on and realize how comfortable you can feel in the winter or summer. Ceiling fans will circulate the air anywhere at different speeds and look beautiful at the same time. Some fans have light kits that come with them, or you can install them another time. Other fans don’t have lights; they are just there to look great and circulate the air.

Ceiling fans come in every decorative style imaginable. You can even make your own to match the room you want to install it in. The one place I choose not to have a ceiling fan is the bedroom. All ceiling fans all have one thing in common and that is they have “blades”. When you hang a fan above something, metaphorically you are hanging spinning blades above that object; such as a table, bed, couch etc. It is usually a little disconcerting if you are sitting beneath blades spinning above your head, don’t you think? Have you ever tried to sleep under a moving ceiling fan? It could be the quietest fan in the world; but the spinning blades will always keep me awake. I don’t like to sit under one either. Logically, I’m sure ceiling fans are installed with great care and they won’t come crashing down, but they symbolize just the opposite. In Feng Shui, we look at things such as this and analyze how they make you “feel” energetically. I don’t mind ceiling fans if they are hung high from a cathedral ceiling. They are well out of the way and not right above the head. I do like the way they move the air, just as long as I don’t have to sleep under it.

In Feng Shui, we always look at things and how they represent other things. Metaphorically what are you trying to tell the Universe? There may be alternative ways to keep cool in the summer that don’t involve spinning blades above your head. Why not place portable air conditioners in the house? They are ideal when window air conditioners won’t fit, or you don’t have central air. You might just want to put a portable rotating fan a distance away from the bed. The positioning of items in rooms with Feng Shui (the Chinese art of placement) will determine if you have a good flow of energy in the room. Sit quietly in your bedroom and see how it “feels”. If your master bedroom is large enough that you don’t have to place the bed directly under the ceiling fan; then you are ok with the aesthetics of having it in the room. But the smoke from combustible lead can be toxic, especially if an area’s inhabitants are frequently exposed to it. One or more recent studies have shown that Catholic clergy who work with candles as part of a worship service sometimes experience health problems from too much lead exposure. Look for candles that have thread wicks that are non-toxic for burning. Of course, it won’t matter if your candles are for decorating only without being lit.

2. Never leave burning candles unattended. Make sure an adult is in the room at all times to monitor a candle’s flame. A breeze from an open window, an accidental brush of a pet’s tail, or other unexpected occurrences may let the flame catch nearby surfaces and cause a fire. Even sputtering wax can pop, and although rare, burn a hole in a tabletop cover or the flooring.

3. Keep candles out of the reach of pets and children. Obviously, lit candles pose a danger to grasping fingers of toddlers. Even unlit candles, however, may tempt older children to find matches or a lighter and burn the candles for their own use. If the candles are used as decorator pieces, make sure the kids know never to light them.

4. Don’t burn too many at one time. Although romantic images of candle-laced bedrooms or candle-adorned bathtubs may encourage our use of dozens of lovely candles on a single occasion, this can be dangerous, since one person may not be able to watch all at once prevent sputtering or spreading if one should pop.

5. Make sure to extinguish each candle carefully. Get a bell-shaped extinguisher with a long handle to perform this function, which reduces the amount of residual smoke that can linger after blowing them out. Check the wick to be sure no glowing spots remain. If the candle comes with a cover, you may want to replace it as an extra security measure.

Place scented candles in the bathroom to eliminate odors, or try romantic designs in the bedroom. Functional candles should be kept on hand in case of electrical outages. Buying The Right Comforter For Your Bed

Putting the right comforter on your bed can make the whole bedroom look fabulous. Comforters are the most visible of all the bedding pieces, so when you change the comforter you make a large change in the decor of the bedroom itself. But comforters are also very functional as they make for a very warm, and soft bed to sleep in too. But getting the right comforter for your bed takes some thought and preparation, and this article will help you make the right decision when you buy.

The first factor in choosing the right comforter is to make sure that it actually fits your bed. This may sound like a simple thing, but not all mattresses are the same size because of their design. If you have a very standard mattress it will most likely fit into one of the conventional categories like "Full", Queen", or "King".

But many mattresses these days are not standard sizes because mattress makers have gone to adding more features like pillow tops on one side or sometimes both sides of the mattress. This means that the mattress is now much thicker than it would normally be. And that will also affect the size of any bedding that you are now able to put on that bed. That's why it's always a good idea to measure your bed and mattress to make sure that you know what size comforter to get beforehand and won't have to be faced with the prospect of having to return the bedding that you love when you find that it just doesn't look right on your bed.

When considering a comforter look at the TPI or threads per inch too. This figure will often give you a good idea of the quality level that has been put into that comforter. Generally speaking thread counts above 250 produce a soft and comfortable feel and fabric that will last a long time. Try to avoid thread counts below 200.

It's also not a bad idea to look for a comforter that has patterns on both sides. That way you can change the look of the bed from time to time and not just have the same pattern all the time.

If you are in the market for a down comforter, the most expensive kinds will have pure white down in them, but actually a mixture of down and feathers will do the job nicely and is not as expensive. Just avoid so-called down comforters that have a really low ratio of down to feathers. The higher the down ratio in the comforter the more important that the cover be what is called "down proof" because down is so small and can actually work its way through a normal cover. Usually this designation is listed on the comforter package.

Finally, be sure that a down comforter is stitched so that the insulation material cannot move about very freely or shift. If the stitching is not in place the down can shift so that some parts of the comforter do not even offer much insulation at all. This is widely known, and most down comforters will have necessary stitching in place on the quilt, but just make sure before you buy.

Buying a good quality comforter is an investment in practicality and appearance at the same time. Use these guidelines for choosing your new comforter and you should be happy with it for years to come.

(ARA) - Is there a traffic jam in your bathroom? Do you find yourself bumping into your family or the walls while brushing your teeth? If so, it may be time to make your bathroom more functional by rethinking how you use the space.

According to Better Homes and Gardens Web site, www.bhg.com, a standard size bathroom is 35 to 80 square feet. A typical master bath is 100 square feet or more. While it may be small compared to other rooms in the house, this standard space can really open up when you combine your personal preferences and style with how you want to use the bathroom.

Assessing Your Bathroom’s Space

When working with homeowners to create a new room plan, I often start out with the big-picture question: “In a perfect world, what would your bathroom feel like?” In the past, answers have been “like the outside brought indoors” or “like a cottage on the lake.” Hidden in both of those answers was a key to a successful room plan -- the concept of space. You can use the same square footage to create an open, shared space or a private, cozy space. The difference is how traffic patterns and designs can work together to result in a completely different feel.

When you’re reassessing your bathroom’s space, ask yourself the following questions to pinpoint a design that is the most functional for you.

* How many people will use this bathroom? Will they use it at the same time?

* Rethink the essentials. Do you need double sinks or a bidet in the guest bath?

* Take out fixtures that do not meet your functionality. If you are adding fixtures, look for adjoining space to add to your bathroom. Closets and fifth bedrooms are great options for more space.

Another great idea to thin out traffic in the bathroom is to add a sink to another room. American Standard came up with the clever idea of adding a round countertop sink in a glass makeup table in the bedroom.

This not only saves space in the bathroom, but it also allows for more privacy by splitting the areas into two rooms. The single-mount faucet is a simple, sleek option that blends with updated traditional and contemporary styles.

How much privacy do you need?

Should the toilet be placed in a separate room? Popular in the ’80s and ’90s, separate water closets have become a standard in new home design. Many bathroom designs tuck the toilet into a corner or separate space, out of sight from the bathroom’s entrance. If space is still an issue, a half wall or glassed partition can give the feel of more privacy without gobbling up square footage.

What is your bathing routine?

Do you need a shower or a tub or both? If there are multiple bathrooms in your home, there may be the opportunity to simplify function in one or more to open up space. One of my clients wanted a double steam shower instead of a tub for the master bath. This decision created space that they wouldn’t have used with a tub. This client then installed a soaking tub in one of the guest baths for smart space savings and resale value.

How does this bathroom work in the overall house plan?

Do you need to move entrances or change doors? Simply changing a hinged door to a sliding pocket door can convert a tight space into plenty of room. When I worked on the bathroom design and layout with American Standard's 2003 Ugliest Bathroom Contest winner, I encountered a doorway that seemed out of place. We moved a hallway entrance from the master bath into the master bedroom for more privacy. And to save space, we used a pocket door instead of the original hinged door.
